Cambodia Investment Review
Slated for November 2-3, 2023, at the Borei Angkor Hotel in Siem Reap, the Cambodia Climate Change Summit 2023 (CCCS23) is primed to be the most ambitious of its kind, engaging an expansive network of experts, diplomats, and stakeholders from across Southeast Asia and beyond. With a roster of topics that span from climate financing and renewable energy to water security and sustainable tourism, the Summit aims to cement its status as a premier platform for high-level discussions on climate change.
The Minister of Environment H.E. Eang Sophalleth will kick off the plenary session with a keynote address, signaling Cambodias governmental commitment to combating climate change. This session will be enriched by remarks from the Australian and U.S. Embassies, among other key institutions. U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of Cambodia, W. Patrick Murphy, emphasized the importance of the Summit by saying, “Donors, NGOs, and public and private sector partners can work together to help Cambodia combat the negative effects of climate change and reach carbon neutrality by 2050.
The Summit is an excellent opportunity for information sharing and partnership building among key stakeholders working on climate change here in Cambodia, regionally, and globally.
Committed To Strengthen Cambodian Resilience To Climate Change
Australia has been accorded the status of Official Partner for CCCS23 via its flagship economic development program, the Cambodia Australia Partnership for Resilient Economic Development (CAPRED). Australian Ambassador to Cambodia, H.E. Justin Whyatt, took pride in the partnership: I am delighted Australia is the Official Partner of CCCS23. Australia is committed to working with Cambodia to strengthen its resilience to climate change, build a clean energy sector, and meet its climate-neutral target by 2050. He also revealed that CAPRED would be hosting sessions focused on climate-smart agriculture, pathways to climate-resilient clean water supply, and inclusive climate finance.
The Summit also receives generous backing from founding partner United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Oxfam, and Kosher Climate. Additional sponsors are expected to be announced as the Summit date draws closer.
Markus Bürli, SDC Director of Cooperation, highlighted the importance of practical applications in combatting climate change: We need to make sure that the many already existing technologies and services to mitigate and adapt to climate change are put into practice. In alignment with this goal, the Summit will feature a Sustainable Solutions Expo, sponsored by SDC, aimed at showcasing a variety of climate-focused initiatives and products.
The Summit Continues Its Legacy of Sustainability by Setting A New Benchmark
The Summit continues its legacy of sustainability by setting a new benchmark: CCCS23 will be the first event of its kind to be fully offset by carbon credits, building on CCCS22’s record as Cambodia’s first carbon-neutral conference.
Registration for CCCS23 is free due to the benevolent support from its sponsors, and those interested are encouraged to register early at the official Summit website, cccs23.org, as spaces are subject to approval.
