WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. President Donald Trump has nominated Christopher J. Anderson, a national security adviser to Senator Steve Daines of Montana, to serve as the next United States Ambassador to Cambodia, filling a diplomatic post that has remained vacant for several years.

If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Anderson would become Washington’s top diplomat in Phnom Penh at a time when the United States is seeking to strengthen economic, security, and people-to-people ties with Cambodia and the broader Southeast Asian region.

The nomination would bring an experienced congressional and national security professional to the role, with Anderson having spent more than a decade working on foreign affairs, defense, veterans’ issues, and international policy matters in both the legislative and executive branches of the U.S. government.

Capitol Hill Veteran

Anderson currently serves as National Security Adviser to Senator Steve Daines, advising on issues including national security, foreign trade, international finance, foreign affairs, and veterans’ policy.

Prior to joining Daines’ office in 2022, he served as Special Assistant in the Office of Congressional and Legislative Affairs at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs from 2017 to 2021.

He also held several policy positions in the office of Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, including Military Legislative Assistant, and began his congressional career with Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin.

His experience has largely focused on defense, foreign policy, congressional relations, and international affairs.

Diplomatic Post Vacant For Years

The nomination would end an extended period without a Senate-confirmed U.S. ambassador in Phnom Penh, with the embassy having been led by chargés d’affaires and other senior diplomatic officials in recent years.

The appointment comes as Cambodia and the United States continue engagement across a range of areas including trade, investment, education, public health, security cooperation, and regional stability.

The United States remains one of Cambodia’s largest export markets, while American companies continue to explore opportunities in sectors including manufacturing, technology, agriculture, logistics, and professional services.

Focus On U.S.-Cambodia Relations

If confirmed, Anderson will be tasked with overseeing one of Washington’s most strategically significant diplomatic relationships in mainland Southeast Asia.

The role will involve managing bilateral relations, supporting American citizens and businesses in Cambodia, promoting trade and investment ties, and engaging with the Cambodian government on regional and international issues.

Anderson’s background in national security and congressional policymaking is expected to provide him with experience relevant to navigating increasingly complex geopolitical and economic dynamics across the Indo-Pacific region.

The nomination will now proceed through the U.S. Senate confirmation process before Anderson can formally assume the ambassadorial post in Phnom Penh.
