Cambodia Investment Review
The Angkor Wat International Half Marathon (AWHM) in Siem Reap marked another milestone this year with a record-breaking turnout of over 14,000 runners from approximately 80 countries. The event, which started in 1996 with just 500 participants, has grown into a globally recognized marathon. This year’s edition drew additional attention due to the participation of Prime Minister Hun Manet, who ran alongside a diverse mix of local and international runners, reinforcing Cambodia’s potential as a hub for large-scale events that drive tourism.
Expats Embrace the Angkor Wat Half Marathon
Among the participants, around 5,000 were non-Cambodian runners, with the top three expat countries represented being Britain, France, and Australia. The marathon, now in its 11th year of partnership with the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia and Manulife, continues to demonstrate a significant impact on both domestic tourism and community health. Manulife’s long-term sponsorship of the event underscores its commitment to fostering healthier lifestyles and supporting Cambodia’s tourism sector.
Stephen Higgins, founder and Managing Partner of Mekong Strategic Capital, reflected on the event’s evolution and its charm. “I first did the run 15 years ago, when there were a lot less people. But it is still such a magical place for a fun run, and there is genuine joy amongst the participants,” he said. Higgins also noted the smooth handling of security despite the Prime Minister’s participation. “I was expecting security to be a nightmare this year with the PM running, but it was surprisingly unobtrusive. Looking forward to him doing the 10km run next year!”
Boost to Local Businesses and Tourism Recovery
The marathon is seen as a significant driver of tourism for Siem Reap, with the influx of visitors providing a boost to local businesses. Hotels, restaurants, and tour operators reported increased activity during the weekend, benefiting from the combined attendance of locals, expats, and tourists. Tom O’Sullivan, CEO of Realestate.com.kh, emphasized the broader value of such events for the community and the tourism sector. “It’s the second year I’ve joined the run. It’s one of the best weekends to be in Siem Reap all year. The place is buzzing with locals, expats, and tourists—Pub Street, hotels, restaurants, and markets are full. It would be great to see more events like this. They are so important to promoting Cambodia and rebuilding the tourism sector.”
Darren O’Shaughnessy, Country Manager of Hongkong Land, highlighted the unique position of the AWHM in showcasing Siem Reap’s cultural heritage and supporting meaningful causes. “The expat business community in Cambodia has truly embraced the Angkor Wat International Half Marathon. This event is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the beauty and heritage of Siem Reap, and the expat community should encourage friends, family, and colleagues from abroad to visit. Additionally, the marathon supports crucial causes such as promoting the ban of anti-personnel mines and supporting children’s hospitals like Angkor Children’s Hospital and Kantha Bopha Children’s Hospital.”
Opportunities for Expanding Expat Tourism through Events
O’Shaughnessy further commended the organizers and stakeholders involved in making the event successful. “The influx of visitors for the event can have a significant positive impact on the local economy, benefiting many businesses and communities. I would like to commend the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia for organizing this event, Manulife Cambodia for their sponsorship, and the Royal Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia for supporting the event. It was also a proud moment to see the Cambodian Prime Minister participate in the race this year. Whether you’re a runner or not, I highly recommend considering a trip to Siem Reap during this time. The atmosphere is incredible, and Siem Reap is an amazing destination.”
Expats and local stakeholders alike have also discussed opportunities for expanding the event’s impact. Suggestions include adding side events to the weekend to encourage participants to extend their stay, further driving tourism and economic benefits for the city. By building on the success of the AWHM, Siem Reap has the potential to position itself as a leading destination for large-scale international events. Stakeholders see room for replicating such initiatives across Cambodia to boost domestic expat tourism while contributing to cultural preservation and economic development.
