A new alliance has been established in Cambodia, aimed at facilitating the nation’s transition to clean energy and fostering dialogue between government entities and the private sector. The Cambodian Clean Energy Business Alliance (CEBA) is set to play a pivotal role in steering the country’s net-zero objectives, according to Dr. Michael Renfrew, EnergyLab’s Program and Operations Lead.
The formation of this alliance represents a concerted effort to unify the private sector’s interests and create a platform that addresses existing market needs, including skills development, capacity building, and public awareness regarding clean energy initiatives.
Collaboration to Address Key Challenges
Natharoun Ngo Son, Country Director at EnergyLab, emphasized that the launch of CEBA marks the beginning of a collaborative journey. The next phase involves members working together to identify key priorities that will be brought to the attention of governmental stakeholders. This strategic approach is designed to ensure that the voices of private sector participants are heard in discussions that influence clean energy policies.
Challenges facing the industry were highlighted by Choon Yik Tong, Head of the Sub-Committee on Sustainability for the Textile, Apparel, Footwear & Travel Goods Association in Cambodia. He noted that significant obstacles such as cost constraints, technical difficulties, and regulatory frameworks need to be addressed. The hope is that CEBA will serve as a unifying force to help overcome these barriers and facilitate a smoother transition to sustainable energy practices.
Empowering the Private Sector for Future Growth
Katherine McLean, Executive Director at the International Business Chamber of Cambodia, remarked on the importance of empowering the private sector. She indicated that a robust private sector voice is essential for driving trade and investment in Cambodia, which is crucial for the country’s economic development and energy goals. Jhelum Chowdhury from the Indian Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia expressed his support for Cambodia’s clean energy journey, underscoring India’s commitment to assist in this transition.
The launch of CEBA coincided with the first day of Clean Energy Week, which concluded with a networking event held at the Sofitel Hotel in Phnom Penh. This event provided an opportunity for stakeholders to connect, share insights, and discuss collaborative efforts toward achieving Cambodia’s clean energy targets.
