International representatives from several key embassies, including Australia, Britain, Canada, France, India, and Japan, have visited the Techo International Airport (TIA) project site, signifying a strong collaborative effort and support for Cambodia’s infrastructure development.
The TIA, poised to become a pivotal hub, is a greenfield airport spanning an extensive 2,600-hectare area, strategically located 19 kilometers from the heart of Phnom Penh. With its completion projected for early 2025, the airport aims to significantly enhance Cambodia’s connectivity and foster bilateral relations.
Designed as a 4F class airport, capable of handling the largest aircraft including the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747, the TIA represents a significant leap forward in Cambodia’s aviation capabilities with a dual-4km length runway. In the first phase, the airport will be capable of facilitating about 13 million passengers per year. Subsequently, in the second phase, the airport’s capacity will expand to accommodate 30 million travelers, with the final phase reaching up to 50 million upon the project’s completion.
Ensure Market Demand Increases To Fully Utilize Impressive Facility
During the diplomatic tour, officials expressed admiration for the meticulous planning and sustainable design integrated into the airport’s infrastructure. Notably, the inclusion of green initiatives such as skylights and solar power underscores the commitment to environmental responsibility.
“Seeing the progress of the Techo International Airport project firsthand is truly impressive. The attention to detail and quality of design are commendable,” remarked a representative from one of the embassies. However, they added, “While the infrastructure is essential, Cambodia must also ensure that market demand increases to fully utilize this impressive facility.”
Madam Dr. Lim Lina, Vice Chairlady of Canadia Group, highlighted the extensive collaboration involved in the project, emphasizing the diverse contributions from suppliers and contractors representing the six embassies. Lina underscored the significance of this collaboration in realizing the airport’s ambitious vision and fostering international partnerships.
With a workforce of approximately 17,000 individuals, the project is currently at 72.3% completion, with a substantial investment of $1.052 billion to date. Notably, $340.5 million was raised through the issuance of airport bonds, reflecting confidence from local financial institutions, corporates, and individuals in the project’s success.
Embassy Officials Commended The Dedication & Expertise
Engaging in constructive discussions with project stakeholders, including CAIC, Heerim Architects and Planners, Changi Airport International, and China Construction Third Engineering Bureau Co Ltd, embassy officials commended the dedication and expertise demonstrated by the project teams.
The Techo International Airport, set to become the third-largest airport globally upon completion, represents a significant milestone in Cambodia’s aviation sector. Established through a joint venture agreement between the Royal Government of Cambodia and Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation (OCIC), the airport holds exclusive rights for funding, construction, operation, and ownership.
Prime Minister Hun Sen’s official naming of the airport in December 2021 further solidified its identity as a beacon of progress for the nation. With its development planned in three phases and a projected capacity to accommodate millions of passengers, the TIA is poised to play a pivotal role in Cambodia’s economic growth and global connectivity.
As the project approaches its final stages, CAIC looks forward to continued collaboration and welcomes investors from partner countries to participate in the TIA and the Airport City Special Economic Zone. With a clear focus on sustainability and innovation, the Techo International Airport stands as a testament to Cambodia’s commitment to advancing its infrastructure and fostering international partnerships.
