The National Bank of Cambodia’s Preah Srey Içanavarman Museum of Economy and Money (SOSORO) is pleased to announce that its major temporary exhibition “Into the Light: The Retrieved Paintings of Phnom Penh’s Silver Pagoda” has so far welcomed more than 8,000 visitors since opening in early October.

Halfway in its 5 months duration, the exhibition has drawn sustained interest from students, families, researchers and cultural enthusiasts. This strong attendance reflects the public’s remarkable appreciation for the rediscovered murals of the Silver Pagoda’s sanctuary and the unique historical narrative they reveal.

Rediscovery Of Early 20th-Century Murals

The SOSORO Museum wishes to respectfully express its profound gratitude to His Majesty King NORODOM Sihamoni and Her Majesty Queen Mother NORODOM Monineath Sihanouk for having granted their gracious authorisation to undertake onsite research and documentation, without which this exhibition would not have been possible to realize.

Curated with the scientific guidance of Professor Olivier de Bernon, member of the Ecole française d’Extrême-orient (EFEO), the exhibition showcases the rediscovery of early 20th-century murals once believed to have disappeared forever, thanks to precious glass-plate negatives lent by Her Royal Highness Princess NORODOM Marie. Through rare photographs, manuscripts, and interactive experiences, visitors are invited to explore the cultural and spiritual significance of the murals’ jātaka scenes and their journey from disappearance to preservation.

The SOSORO Museum is grateful for the exceptional public response the exhibition has received and looks forward to welcoming further visitors in the months ahead.
