Phnom Penh’s Techo International Airport Set to Open on July 10 Pending Final Review

Cambodia Investment Review

Cambodia’s Techo International Airport (TIA) is on track to officially open on July 10, 2025, following a final review meeting between government and project stakeholders that confirmed 96 percent of construction is now complete.

Final Preparations Underway

The joint working group meeting, held last Friday, was chaired by Mao Havannall, Minister in Charge of the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA), and included senior officials from Cambodia Airport Investment Co., Ltd. (CAIC). The session reviewed outstanding work, certification processes, and operational readiness.

Sinn Chanserey Vutha, SSCA Secretary of State and spokesman, stated that discussions focused on final-stage infrastructure development, technology installation, and logistical coordination.

“If nothing changes, the airport is scheduled to be put into official operation on July 10, welcoming national and international tourists from the region and the world,” Vutha said.

Major Infrastructure Investment

The $1.5 billion Techo International Airport is being developed by CAIC, a joint venture between the Royal Government of Cambodia and the Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation.

Located around 20 kilometers south of Phnom Penh across Kandal and Takeo provinces, the airport covers 2,600 hectares and is built to Level 4F international standards. It will be capable of handling long-haul intercontinental flights and large aircraft models such as the Airbus A380-800 and Boeing 747-800.

TIA is expected to significantly enhance Cambodia’s air connectivity and become a critical hub for both tourism and international trade.

Certification and Readiness

With the airport nearly completed, authorities are now focused on ensuring technical and procedural compliance with global aviation standards.

“The construction progress is almost complete, but what we continue to monitor are issues related to the process in accordance with the technical conditions for issuing certificates and the technical conditions for putting into operation,” Vutha added.

All stakeholders reiterated the importance of public-private collaboration to ensure the timely launch of the facility.

Aviation Sector on the Rise

The timing of TIA’s launch coincides with a strong rebound in Cambodia’s aviation industry. SSCA data shows the country’s three existing international airports handled a record 6.2 million passengers in 2024.

A total of 31 national and international airlines now operate flights to and from Cambodia, signaling a growing need for expanded capacity and modern infrastructure.

TIA’s opening is expected to play a key role in Cambodia’s broader economic and tourism development strategies as it positions itself as a regional aviation and logistics hub.
