Cambodia Investment Review
Camwood Studios, a division of Cambodian Broadcasting Service (CBS), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with The Studio, a Los Angeles-based production company, to jointly develop and produce a slate of international film and television projects in Cambodia. The move signals growing interest in the Kingdom as a potential location for media production, supported by its expanding creative infrastructure and production capabilities.
The Studio, whose team has experience with content featured at major international festivals including Sundance and Cannes, will collaborate with Camwood Studios to produce up to ten projects for major streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, and Shahid.
Developing International Productions in Cambodia
As part of the agreement, The Studio will bring international creative talent to Cambodia while Camwood Studios will provide production services, including access to six equipped studios, local crews, and post-production support.
David E. Ulmer, CEO of CBS, described the partnership as a step toward building a more robust creative industry in Cambodia. He noted the importance of long-term investment in local talent and infrastructure to support sustainable growth in the sector.
Co-founders of The Studio, Sandy Grigsby and Ken Rutkowski, joined Ulmer at the announcement. They highlighted Cambodia’s cultural appeal and improving production environment as key factors in the decision to enter the market.
Supporting Cambodia’s Media Sector
The collaboration is expected to contribute to local job creation, technical training opportunities, and increased visibility for Cambodian locations and culture in international productions. It also aligns with efforts to grow the country’s creative economy and strengthen its position within the regional media landscape.
Ken Rutkowski said Cambodia offered “strong potential” as a production location and emphasized the value of working with a local partner like Camwood Studios to navigate the environment and support execution.
Continued Momentum for CBS and Camwood Studios
The announcement follows a period of activity for CBS, which has been recognized for digital expansion efforts and increased regional viewership. Its local production of MasterChef Cambodia was recently nominated for an International Emmy Award, marking a notable milestone for the company and local content creators.
Camwood Studios continues to serve as one of the few facilities in Cambodia capable of hosting large-scale film and television projects. The firm’s focus remains on providing end-to-end services that meet international standards, with a goal of attracting further interest from global production companies.
While the partnership is at an early stage, it represents a potential pathway for Cambodia to increase its participation in international media production. As more companies explore Southeast Asia for filming and content development, Cambodia may benefit from targeted investment and collaboration models that emphasize local capacity-building. The first projects under the MOU are expected to begin development later this year.
