Celebrating a decade since its inception, Khmer Times, Cambodia’s only daily English-language newspaper, commemorated its 10th anniversary with an event at NagaWorld 1, drawing over 200 guests including government officials and diplomatic leaders. The gathering showcased the newspaper’s ongoing efforts to deliver comprehensive news coverage through its print and digital platforms across Cambodia.
Mohan Bandam, the founder and publisher of Khmer Times, reflected on the evolution of the publication since its first issue in 2014. Bandam highlighted the publication’s role in fostering public discourse, promoting accountability, and its function as a watchdog for the interests of the people. He noted the significant role the press plays in shaping societal views and informing the public.
Khmer Times The Sole English-Print Media Group In Cambodia
Information Minister Neth Pheaktra acknowledged Khmer Times as the sole English-print media group in Cambodia dedicated to upholding “press freedom and dignity”. He emphasized the publication’s role in enabling readers to critically assess information and its engagement with the audience through initiatives like publishing Letters to the Editor.
Remarks were also made by Shaharuddin Onn, the Malaysian Ambassador Designate to Cambodia, who recognized Khmer Times for its contributions to strengthening the bilateral relations between Cambodia and Malaysia. Onn described the publication as a reliable source of news, which supports his duties and strengthens ties between the two nations.
Oknha Tan Khee Meng, President of the Malaysian Business Chamber of Cambodia (MBCC), commended the Khmer Times’ editorial team for their detailed reporting and analytical approach. He stressed the importance of the newspaper in keeping the chamber’s members informed, thus playing a crucial role in the business community.
Achieved Recognition Both Within Cambodia & Internationally
The newspaper has achieved recognition both within Cambodia and internationally, being the sole recipient in Southeast Asia of the prestigious Ulrich Wickert International Award, among other honors. It is frequently cited by major global media outlets, which underlines its role as a significant player in the media industry.
The anniversary event also highlighted Cambodia’s cultural heritage, featuring performances that displayed the nation’s traditional arts, underscoring Khmer Times’ engagement with the cultural aspects of Cambodian society. This celebration reflected the publication’s commitment to its journalistic endeavors and its place in the media landscape of Cambodia.
