Harrison White

As Cambodia’s financial sector becomes increasingly digital, banks are competing not only on products and pricing, but on customer experience, technology and trust. Having been named Cambodia’s Best Retail Bank 2026 by The Asian Banker, ABA Bank has continued to strengthen its position through digital innovation, an expanding self-service network and a growing ecosystem of integrated financial services.

In this edition of Leader Talks, Harrison White speaks with Chhun Vichet, Chief Retail Banking Officer at ABA Bank, discusses the strategy behind the bank’s award-winning retail business, what differentiates ABA in an increasingly competitive market, how retail banking supports businesses and SMEs, and why technologies such as artificial intelligence will shape the next generation of banking while trust remains the industry’s most valuable asset.

Cambodia’s Best Retail Bank for 2026

CIR: ABA has been recognised as Cambodia’s Best Retail Bank for 2026. Which innovations or strategic decisions do you believe were most responsible for earning this award, and how will you build on that success in the years ahead?

Vichet: Receiving this award from The Asian Banker is a great honor for us because it reflects the trust our customers place in ABA every day.

Our strategy has always been simple: to make banking easier, safer, and more convenient for millions of customers across Cambodia. We’ve invested consistently in our digital banking model and the ABA Mobile app, expanded our self-banking network across the country, and introduced services that let customers open accounts, make payments, transfer money, and manage their finances whenever and wherever they choose.

Going forward, we’ll continue to improve customer experience while expanding the financial solutions we offer to individuals and businesses. As customer expectations evolve, our focus will remain the same – to be the bank people rely on every day.

Biggest Opportunities For Growth

CIR: Cambodia’s banking sector is highly competitive, with established banks, new entrants, and fintech firms all vying for market share. What differentiates ABA in this increasingly crowded landscape, and where do you see the biggest opportunities for growth?

Vichet: Competition is good for the industry because it encourages everyone to innovate and deliver better value for customers.

What sets ABA apart is that we combine digital convenience with the strength of a full-service bank. Customers don’t come to us for just one product – they use ABA throughout their daily lives, whether they’re receiving a salary, making payments, saving, borrowing, or running a business. That creates long-term relationships rather than one-off transactions.

Looking ahead, we see strong opportunities as Cambodia becomes increasingly digital. Businesses and consumers are looking for integrated financial services, and ABA is well positioned to meet those needs through one connected banking ecosystem.

Attract & Support Corporate/SME Clients

CIR: ABA has built a strong reputation in retail banking, but many businesses are looking for integrated solutions across payroll, payments, lending, and employee banking. How does your retail strength help attract and support corporate and SME clients?

Vichet: Our retail business is one of our biggest strengths because every business ultimately serves people – its employees, customers, and suppliers.

With millions of active retail customers and a highly engaged digital platform, ABA can connect businesses directly with the financial services their people use every day. A company can pay salaries through ABA, while employees immediately have access to payments, transfers, savings, and other banking services in the same ecosystem.

The same applies to merchants and SMEs. We help them accept digital payments, manage cash flow more efficiently, and operate more smoothly. That’s why our retail and business banking capabilities reinforce each other and create value for businesses of every size.

AI & Digital Innovation Reshape Financial Services

CIR: Looking ahead, as AI and digital innovation reshape financial services, what is your vision for the future of banking in Cambodia, and what role do you expect ABA to play in leading that transformation?

Vichet: We believe banking will become even more digital, more personalized, and more intelligent – but trust will remain the foundation.

Technologies such as AI and advanced analytics will help us deliver better customer experiences, strengthen fraud prevention, and provide more relevant financial solutions. At the same time, innovation must always be accompanied by strong security and responsible banking practices.

ABA will continue investing in technology, cybersecurity, and digital capabilities, but our objective goes beyond introducing new features. It’s about solving real customer needs and helping Cambodia build a more connected, inclusive, and cashless economy.
