Cambodia Investment Review

“Australian business champion” Tennealle O’Shannessy has led a delegation of 26 Australian agribusiness companies to Phnom Penh this week, highlighting growing commercial interest in Cambodia’s food and agriculture sector.

The visit forms part of the Australian Agrifood Connections Mission, delivered under the Australia–Southeast Asia Business Exchange (A-SEABX) program and supported by the Australian Embassy in Cambodia and the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade). Running from March 15 to 20 across Cambodia and Vietnam, the five-day initiative is designed to connect Australian agribusinesses with regional partners and explore new opportunities for trade and investment.

Officials say the mission represents one of the largest Australian agribusiness delegations to visit Cambodia in recent years, reflecting the country’s increasing importance within Southeast Asia’s evolving food supply chains.

Delegation explores Cambodia’s food and retail landscape

The program began with site visits to major retailers and agribusiness operators in Phnom Penh, providing the delegation with a closer look at Cambodia’s rapidly developing food distribution networks and consumer trends.

Participants examined the structure of Cambodia’s supply chains, modern retail growth, and the rising demand among urban consumers for premium food and beverage products. Industry observers note that as Cambodia’s middle class expands, demand for high-quality imported food products—particularly those with strong food safety and traceability standards—is also increasing.

The mission also included the Australia–Cambodia Agrifood Connections event, which brought together business leaders, agricultural experts, industry associations, and potential commercial partners. The event focused on identifying new pathways for collaboration and strengthening two-way trade between the two countries.

Focus on premium food exports and agricultural technology

The Australian delegation represents companies operating across two key segments of the agrifood sector.

The first group includes exporters of premium food and beverage products such as meat, seafood, dairy, horticulture, wine, beverages, and packaged foods. These companies are exploring opportunities to expand their presence in Cambodia’s retail and hospitality markets.

The second stream focuses on agricultural supply chain solutions, bringing together companies that provide inputs, technologies, and expertise designed to improve agricultural productivity, sustainability, and traceability. These firms are exploring partnerships that could support Cambodia’s domestic food production and strengthen the overall agri-food value chain.

Australian officials say this combination of food exports and agricultural technology reflects a broader strategy to deepen agrifood cooperation with Cambodia while supporting the development of more efficient and sustainable food systems.

Forum highlights investment opportunities in Cambodia

The visit also coincides with the Australia–Cambodia Agriculture and Food Forum 2026, hosted by the Australian Embassy in Phnom Penh. The forum brings together government officials, businesses, and industry specialists to discuss investment opportunities across Cambodia’s agriculture and food sectors.

Discussions at the forum include Cambodia’s regulatory environment, emerging investment models, and the role of international partnerships in strengthening the country’s agricultural value chains.

Ambassador Derek Yip said Cambodia’s expanding economy and modernising retail sector are creating stronger demand for premium and traceable food products, presenting opportunities for Australian producers and agribusiness firms.

The mission continues later this week in Vietnam, where the delegation will meet additional partners and explore further opportunities to expand agrifood trade and commercial cooperation across Southeast Asia.
