The two-day “Color Outside the Lines” painting exhibition, hosted by Humans of Phnom Penh, concluded on May 10 at the SOSORO Museum, spotlighting Cambodia’s growing community of contemporary artists and reaffirming the importance of cultural expression as a driver of national identity and community development.

Held from May 9–10, 2025, the exhibition featured the works of 15 selected Cambodian artists, each exploring themes of Khmer identity, heritage, and modern narratives through visual storytelling. The exhibition attracted a diverse audience that included government officials, students, art enthusiasts, and members of the international business and diplomatic community.

Supporting Khmer Culture Through Art

The exhibition culminated in an award ceremony recognizing the Top 3 artists:

  • 1st Place: Im Seila
  • 2nd Place: Rith Bonrotanak
  • 3rd Place: Kunthea Kou

The awards were presented by H.E. Samheng Boros, Minister attached to the Prime Minister, who emphasized in his closing remarks the vital role that arts and culture play in fostering community cohesion, national pride, and socio-economic development.

The event was the latest initiative by Humans of Phnom Penh (HoPP), a platform founded by Niraj Gupta to empower local storytellers and artists through community engagement and professional exposure. Gupta said the exhibition was more than just an art show—it was an opportunity to build connections between Cambodian culture and the broader public.

“Art is not just an expression; it is a bridge connecting history, identity, and the future,” said Gupta. “This exhibition is just the beginning of our mission to elevate Khmer artists to greater heights.”

Institutional and Private Sector Support

The exhibition received strong backing from a broad coalition of partners across the private sector and civil society. Diamond Sponsors Phillip Bank and Prince Foundation were joined by IBCC, ItaCham, CanCham, TVS, SBC India Group, CamEd Business School, and Macro Solutions in supporting the initiative.

The event also benefited from strategic hospitality partnerships with Dakshin’s Restaurant, Mekong Authentic India Restaurant, Namaste Indian Restaurant, and UWA Korean Street Food, reinforcing a collaborative approach to promoting Cambodian creative industries.

Key media partners included Kiri Post, TVK, Khmer Times, and Cambodia Investment Review, who helped expand the exhibition’s visibility to a national audience.

Elevating the Role of Art in Cambodia’s Future

Held at the Preah Srey Içanavarman Museum of Economy and Money (SOSORO), the exhibition offered a venue where traditional Khmer motifs met contemporary interpretations—inviting public dialogue around Cambodia’s cultural evolution.

The event drew hundreds of attendees and provided artists with critical exposure to sponsors, collectors, and members of the public—an essential component for sustainability in Cambodia’s nascent creative economy.

Looking ahead, Humans of Phnom Penh plans to expand its initiatives with further exhibitions, artist showcases, and collaborative programs that aim to position Khmer culture at the center of Cambodia’s national and international identity.
