After a six-year absence, the German Business Cambodia (GBC) has successfully revived the Oktoberfest in Phnom Penh, marking a notable return for this cultural event in the city’s social calendar. Held on October 25th and 26th at the Connexion Community Mall on Koh Pich Island, Oktoberfest Cambodia 2024 aimed to reconnect the Cambodian community with German culture while fostering bilateral ties between the two nations through a celebration of traditional German food, music, and entertainment.
The two day event was attended by both local and international business community in Cambodia as well as senior business and diplomatic members including German Ambassador to Cambodia Stefan Messerer and British Ambassador to Cambodia Dominic Williams MBE.
Event Highlights and Community Engagement
Tassilo Brinzer, the event organizer from GBC, shared his perspective on the festival’s revival, stating, “This first traditional Oktoberfest in six years was an excellent occasion for people to come together. Many attendees returned for a second day, indicating the positive reception from the community. For the German communities, Oktoberfest serves as a way to connect with peers through music, food, and drinks.”
The event featured an array of beverages, including European beers such as Carlsberg and 1664, Asian options like Singha, and local favorites such as Angkor and Black Panther, made possible through a partnership with Cambrew. Attendees enjoyed a diverse food selection from Hummus House and Hops Restaurants. The OZAPFT live band provided entertainment throughout the festival, contributing to a lively atmosphere.
Venue and Future Events
Simon Griffiths, a spokesperson for Connexion, discussed the significance of hosting the event. “It was important for Connexion to welcome ambassadors, government officials, families, and friends back to Oktoberfest. This event was a key opportunity for community engagement. Connexion is establishing itself as a community hub and business center in the Koh Pich CBD. We appreciate the efforts of German Business Cambodia, Eurocham, and all business partners who contributed to the event.”
Since its soft launch in March, Connexion has hosted over 30 business and social events, catering to various sectors, including technology, digital communities, and education. Griffiths noted, “We look forward to hosting many more events that foster social and business connections in the coming months.”
Harrison White, founder of CIR Media and an event sponsor, expressed satisfaction with the festival’s organization and venue. “The event was well-received, and the venue demonstrated its capacity for large-scale gatherings, which may attract more brands to use the space in 2025.”
