Expressing his gratitude, Deputy Prime Minister Aun Pormoniroth acknowledged Indonesia’s pivotal role in diplomatic efforts and leadership within the ASEAN community. Ambassador Santo reciprocated by attributing Indonesia’s successful chairmanship of ASEAN in 2023 to the foundation laid by Cambodia’s chairmanship in 2022, especially considering the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Untapped Potential for Cooperation Between the Two Nations

Ambassador Santo emphasized the untapped potential for cooperation between the two nations, citing historical ties that should translate into enhanced trade, investment, tourism, and socio-cultural relations. “There is still ample room for cooperation that must be developed and strengthened by taking advantage of the close historical ties between the two countries,” remarked Ambassador Santo during the meeting.

Crucially, the Ambassador highlighted the need to balance trade between Indonesia and Cambodia, identifying a lack of awareness among Indonesian business people about Cambodia and its potential. To bolster economic ties, he stressed the importance of establishing seamless payment systems and direct flights connecting major tourist destinations in both countries. These initiatives, he believes, would cater to the needs of business professionals and travelers, fostering a more interconnected and efficient relationship.

Beyond economic collaboration, Ambassador Santo outlined his commitment to developing community relations, particularly by providing human resource capacity and scholarships. Indonesia stands ready to assist the Cambodian government in nurturing its human resources, with a focus on the younger generation of civil servants. The Ambassador believes that this investment in education will empower the youth to play a pivotal role in deepening and strengthening cooperation between the two nations.

A Strong Focus on Pragmatic Initiatives

As both countries look toward the future, the commitment to translating historical ties into tangible cooperation remains a central theme. The initiatives discussed during this meeting, ranging from economic collaboration to educational support, exemplify a shared vision for mutual benefits and stronger ties between Indonesia and Cambodia.

This diplomatic exchange sets the stage for a new chapter in the relationship between the two nations, with a focus on pragmatic initiatives that will shape the economic and cultural landscape in the years to come.
