The division’s top five

  • No. 1 — Maybank (Cambodia): 4.42 out of 5
  • No. 2 — CIMB Bank Cambodia: 4.40 out of 5
  • Joint No. 3 — SBI Bank (Cambodia): 4.24 out of 5
  • Joint No. 3 — Cambodia Post Bank: 4.24 out of 5
  • No. 5 — Chip Mong Commercial Bank: 4.15 out of 5

Only 0.27 points separate first and fifth place. SuperBankRatings said the close results show that banks with different owners, business models and institutional strengths can achieve similar overall scores.

What drove the leading scores

According to SuperBankRatings, Maybank’s result reflects strong governance and parent-company support, substantial liquidity, experienced management, sustainability capability and technology.

CIMB’s score draws on a similarly broad set of strengths, including group backing, governance, risk management infrastructure, liquidity, technology and sustainability. Its two-hundredths-of-a-point gap behind Maybank makes this the closest contest for first place reported in the series so far.

The index assesses more than balance-sheet size or headline profitability. SuperBankRatings said it reviewed 49 commercial-bank assessments across the wider index and applied 11 assessment parameters and 329 benchmark points. Its published methodology combines 40% quantitative and 60% qualitative analysis.

Asset size determines which division a bank enters; its overall benchmark score determines its rank within that division.

Two divisions remain

The latest results follow the opening under-$1 billion cohort, in which Mizuho Bank Phnom Penh Branch and the Agricultural and Rural Development Bank (ARDB) shared first place.

SuperBankRatings is scheduled to release the $2 billion to $4.99 billion division on September 18 and the $5 billion-plus division on September 21. Its Benchmark Report and Form Guide provide further detail on the current results.

Maybank’s 4.42 score is calculated from the release’s stated 0.02-point lead over CIMB’s 4.40 and its stated 0.27-point lead over fifth-placed Chip Mong Commercial Bank’s 4.15.
