Breathe Wild Mondulkiri Resort: Restoring Nature, Empowering Communities

CIR Life & Luxury

Breathe Wild Mondulkiri Resort, a nature-based retreat located in Cambodia’s north-east region, has announced the opening of its new season. The resort, nestled on a 300-hectare site near the iconic Bousra Waterfall, offers guests a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in nature while supporting community-driven projects that empower local families and restore the natural environment. The project, supported by the HAYSTACK FUND group, is deeply rooted in the heritage of its chairwoman, Linda Phou, whose Khmer family fled Cambodia during the war in 1979. Linda’s leadership brings a deep connection to the region, as her vision guides the project’s commitment to cultural understanding and sustainable development.

Since its founding in 2021, Breathe Wild has invested over $1.5 million in land acquisition, infrastructure, and launching on-site activities. All proceeds from the retreat are reinvested into community development projects, including education, health prevention, and essential services for local families. According to Mr. Jean-François Morin, who leads the project’s governance, “Our mission is to ensure that every dollar spent at Breathe Wild is put back into the local community. Last year alone, we invested over $46,000 into various programs, and we are committed to doing even more this season.”

Transparent Governance and Local Development

The resort’s governance is overseen by a dedicated committee led by Jean-François Morin, a Canadian pharmacist and businessman. The committee ensures transparency in budgeting and operations, with all financial information made publicly available. “We operate with full accountability to ensure that every dollar is used effectively to benefit the community,” Morin emphasized.

Breathe Wild is aiming to raise $100,000 this season through a combination of revenue and donations to fund its ongoing projects. Among the key initiatives currently underway are the establishment of a shop at the entrance of the Bousra Waterfall to showcase local and handicraft products, a nursery and health services center to provide preventative care for the local population, a factoring loan program to support local farmers, and ongoing support for 40 families in the nearby Bousra community, ensuring access to food, education, and healthcare.

Agricultural Impact and Business Engagement

Beyond its role as a retreat, Breathe Wild plays a key part in the local agricultural landscape. The resort’s farm produces specialty herbs and crops, which are sold to high-end restaurants like 4P Pizza in Cambodia. Additionally, Breathe Wild operates a coffee plantation that supports local farmers by providing them with a platform to sell their products and improve their livelihoods. “Breathe Wild is not just a retreat; it’s an integral part of Mondulkiri’s agricultural ecosystem,” Morin emphasized.

This season, the resort is also seeking to attract corporate groups and companies for team-building events and retreats. With high-quality facilities, including a scenic pool and eco-friendly accommodations, Breathe Wild offers a unique environment for businesses to engage in corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. “We want to create an environment where businesses can reconnect with nature while contributing to something bigger,” Morin added.

Future Projects and Community Empowerment

Looking ahead, Breathe Wild plans to expand its community projects, including the establishment of swimming classes and a school to provide educational and health opportunities for local children. Mr. Morin stressed the importance of these initiatives in continuing the resort’s mission to empower local communities and restore the natural environment.

“We invite guests to join us in this journey of restoring nature and empowering people. Breathe Wild offers more than just a retreat—it’s an opportunity to make a lasting impact on Cambodia’s north-east region,” Morin concluded.

As Breathe Wild enters its new season, its focus on transparency, sustainability, and community development continues to drive its growth and impact, offering both a retreat experience and a meaningful way for visitors to contribute to the future of the region.
