Australia has announced the appointment of Mr. Derek Yip as the new Ambassador to the Kingdom of Cambodia. This appointment marks a significant step in strengthening the longstanding relationship between Australia and Cambodia, a valued member of ASEAN and an important regional partner.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong expressed her confidence in Yip’s ability to enhance bilateral relations. “Mr. Derek Yip brings extensive experience and expertise to this role. His background and previous postings have equipped him well to advance Australia’s interests and foster strong ties with Cambodia,” she stated.

Promoting Inclusive And Sustainable Development Is Vital

The relationship between Australia and Cambodia is rooted in cooperation across various sectors, including health, infrastructure, agriculture, and critical issues like peacekeeping and combating transnational crime. Minister Wong highlighted the importance of this cooperation, noting, “Our collaboration with Cambodia on promoting inclusive and sustainable development is vital. We are committed to supporting ASEAN’s role in ensuring peace, prosperity, and security in the region.”

Cambodia’s rapid economic growth presents numerous opportunities for increased trade and investment. Under the government’s “Invested: Australia’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040,” enhancing economic links with Cambodia is a top priority. Wong emphasized, “Cambodia’s dynamic economy offers significant potential for Australian businesses. Strengthening our economic ties will be beneficial for both nations.”

The strong people-to-people ties between Australia and Cambodia further underpin their relationship. With over 57,000 people of Cambodian heritage residing in Australia, these connections play a crucial role in fostering mutual understanding and cooperation. “Our diverse and multicultural communities are a testament to the strong bonds between our countries,” Wong remarked.

Further Enhance Diplomatic And Economic Relations

Mr. Derek Yip, a senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, previously served as Assistant Secretary of the East Asia Political Branch and has completed two postings in China. His extensive experience in the region is expected to be invaluable in his new role.

The appointment also acknowledged the contributions of former Ambassador Justin Whyatt. Wong expressed gratitude for his efforts, saying, “I thank Justin Whyatt for his significant contributions to advancing Australia’s interests in Cambodia. His dedication and hard work have been instrumental in strengthening our bilateral ties.”
