The American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Cambodia, in collaboration with Manulife (Cambodia), organized a family-friendly Summerfest event on July 1, 2023, at Birdies Mini Golf to commemorate America’s 247th Independence Day and to celebrate the bilateral ties between Cambodia and the United States.

The event was presided over by the US Ambassador to Cambodia, Patrick Murphy, and attended by both International and Cambodian companies who share connections to American commerce.

America is a melting pot, so is AmCham Cambodia

In his address to the gathering, AmCham Cambodia President Devin Barta highlighted the significance of such occasions. He emphasized, “Events where we have the opportunity to bring together the whole AmCham family are few and far between. We are the American chamber, but as America is a melting pot, so is AmCham Cambodia. It is our pleasure to share something unique from America with our friends today.”

A few days prior, on June 29, the US embassy had hosted a more formal assembly at the Sofitel Phnom Penh, attended by over 600 individuals. The guest of honour at this event was Ly Thuch, Senior Minister and First Vice-President of the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority, who represented the Cambodian government.

According to local media reports, Ambassador Murphy used the opportunity to affirm the United States’ respect for Cambodia’s sovereignty and independence, as well as underscored the enduring friendship between the two countries. He reflected on the American history, stating, our declaration of Independence in 1776 established a new nation with a government accountable to its citizens.

The American experiment remains a work in progress, and our instruments of democracy strive to uphold the self-evident truth that all people are created equal and endowed with unalienable rights,” he added.

US has provided about $3B in assistance to Cambodia

Thuch reciprocated the sentiment by acknowledging the significance of the re-established diplomatic relations between the two nations since 1991 and the growing cooperation across various sectors of mutual interest.

“In the last 30 years, the United States has provided about $3 billion in assistance to Cambodia for education, health, culture, agriculture, environment, democracy, human rights, and the clearance of unexploded ordnance,” Thuch noted.

He specifically thanked the United States for the substantial support in demining activities, attributing the reduction in mine-related casualties in Cambodia to approximately $190 million in aid allocated by the US since 1993.

Established in 1996, AmCham is an independent, non-profit membership organization that actively supports the growth and success of its members. AmCham businesses have been a pivotal part of Cambodia’s economic development narrative and continue to lead the nation’s international business community.
