Cambodia and Cyprus aims to boost trade ties during first delegation

Officials from Cambodia and Cyprus have expressed their desire to improve trade relations between the two countries after the first ever Cypriot trade delegation touched down in the Kingdom.

At the meeting, which occurred on October 10th the new honorary consul of Cambodia to Cyprus Christopher Larcou paid a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, where he was received by Dr SEA Kosal, secretary of state at the General Department of Legal, Consular and Border Affairs, among others.

New honorary consulate in Larnaca

One of the main focuses on the meeting, was to discuss the opening of a new honorary consulate of Cambodia in the Cypriot city of Larnaca. While not the capital city of Cyprus, Larnaca is considered extremely important tourist destination, as well as hosting the main international airport on the island.

The delegation is being led by Andreas Vyras, mayor of Larnaca and President of the Cyprus Municipalities Association, with other issues being discussed including boosting bilateral trade, as well as tourism between the two nations.

It is expected that an official announcement regarding the consulate will be made during the visit.

Christopher Larcou paid a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

Speaking exclusively to Cambodia Investment Review Salah Essa, Secretary of State and Advisor at the National Committee on Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) stated: “This will be be the first delegation to visit Cambodia from Cyprus since diplomatic ties were established in May 2000 and as such marks an important milestone in relations between the countries”.

The delegation arrived in Cambodia on October 6th and will stay until October 15th Salah added.

Improving tourism and bilateral trade between Cambodia and Cyprus

While tourism was key focus for the delegation both sides were also looking to extend cooperation within a number of other fields, such as trade and investment, economic diplomacy, as well as education and cultural exchanges

Another key event for the delegation will be the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Tourism and and the Municipality of Larnaca.

The MoU would according to Salah cover a number of areas, specifically improving cooperation for facilitating travel between the two countries, the sharing of tourist data, as well as improving cultural and people to people exchanges. Other areas of desired cooperation include tourism management, as well as arranging familiarisation trips for travel agents b between both countries.

Aside from these events the delegation also plan to meet business leaders from a number of key sectors such as property development and hospitality, as well as paying courtesy calls to the governors of both Phnom Penh and Svay Rieng.
