Standard Chartered Bank Vietnam has appointed Nguyen Thuy Hanh as its new CEO and Head of Banking & Coverage, effective October 1, 2024. Hanh is the first Vietnamese national to assume this role, reflecting the bank’s commitment to nurturing local talent and fostering diversity within its leadership.
Hanh brings 30 years of banking experience, having joined Standard Chartered in 1997. She has held key leadership positions such as Head of Financial Institutions for Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, and Head of Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB) for Vietnam. Her leadership in CIB has been instrumental in driving the bank’s growth, with a particular focus on its cross-border strategy. Hanh’s extensive knowledge of both local and international markets positions her well to lead the bank in its next phase of growth.
Leadership Transition and Strategic Focus
Hanh succeeds Michele Wee, who has led the bank during a period of significant growth and strategic development. Under Wee’s leadership, the bank strengthened its focus on sustainability and diversity. Notably, she worked closely with the Vietnamese government to support the country’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Michele also helped organize the first Standard Chartered Marathon in Hanoi, set for November 2024, which aligns with the bank’s efforts to promote community engagement and social responsibility.
Patrick Lee, CEO of Standard Chartered Singapore and ASEAN, praised Wee’s contributions and welcomed Hanh to the new role. “Vietnam is a dynamic and important market for the region and plays a key role in Standard Chartered’s cross-border strategy. I would like to thank Michele for her excellent leadership and outstanding contributions. Together with the local management, Hanh has our fullest support,” Lee said.
Commitment to Vietnam’s Growth
As Standard Chartered Vietnam’s new CEO, Hanh aims to continue the bank’s growth and maintain its focus on sustainability, while furthering the bank’s role in Vietnam’s economic development. “Hanh’s appointment reinforces our commitment to Vietnam’s long-term development,” Lee added. With this leadership transition, Standard Chartered is poised to build on its 120-year legacy in the country, furthering its mission to support Vietnam’s growing economy while promoting sustainable practices in the region.
