Solar Power Meets Affordable Housing: Solarworks Solutions Lights the Way for Sustainable Living in Cambodia

Cambodia Investment Review

The partnership between Solarworks Solutions and mĂ©tra Estate Legacy is reshaping expectations around what affordable housing can deliver in Cambodia, pairing rooftop solar with middle-income residential development as a standard feature rather than a premium upgrade. The collaboration follows the launch of mĂ©tra Estate Legacy’s Phase 1A on November 16, which recorded a 90% subscription rate across 220 units. The response has been viewed as early evidence of pent-up demand for housing that is both financially accessible and sustainable in the long term.

The approach integrates renewable energy directly into project design rather than offering it as a later add-on. The intention is to make sustainability part of the foundation of new communities and not simply a bonus feature. This reflects a shift in consumer expectations, as more homebuyers evaluate not only location and amenities but also the long-term cost efficiency of their homes. mĂ©tra Estate Legacy’s target demographic—middle-income Cambodian families—are increasingly sensitive to rising electricity costs and seeking solutions that keep monthly living expenses predictable.

Sustainability Becomes Central To Home Design

Solarworks Solutions is positioned as the strategic solar partner responsible for the full EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) process. This ensures solar systems are integrated from the earliest stages of construction rather than being retrofitted after handover. According to project representatives, this method enhances system performance, lifespan, and homeowner confidence as installation, wiring, and safety features are designed into the housing blueprint.

The partnership is being described as more than a commercial arrangement—it represents a shared vision to align renewable energy with the future of housing development in the Kingdom. Instead of viewing solar technology as a luxury reserved for high-end developments, the model demonstrates that sustainability can be accessible to a wider market if integrated efficiently. The result is both environmentally friendly homes and a stronger selling point for developers competing for middle-income buyers.

Reduced Electricity Bills Improve Long-Term Affordability

Lower utility costs are at the core of the value proposition being marketed to homeowners. Solar power offers predictable monthly savings that contribute to the overall affordability of home ownership. By reducing a recurring cost that typically rises over time, the development aims to free up disposable income for families and increase the financial viability of long-term homeownership.

Solarworks Solutions Managing Director Low Chee Hock described the initiative as a turning point for the sector. “Our partnership with mĂ©tra Legacy Estate is a landmark step in proving that sustainable living and affordable housing are not mutually exclusive. We are proud to engineer solar solutions that not only power homes but also empower homeowners by reducing their cost of living. This collaboration is a testament to our commitment to driving Cambodia’s green transition from the ground up, starting with the communities where people live,” he said.

Contribution To National Energy Independence

The partnership also aligns with wider national ambitions to diversify energy sources and reduce dependence on imported fuels. By deploying rooftop solar at a residential scale, the project helps distribute energy generation capacity across households rather than concentrating it exclusively within grid-based infrastructure. In the long term, this model supports energy resilience by reducing pressure on peak-time usage and broadening the mix of energy supply across the country.

If widely adopted, this approach may enable Cambodia to strengthen both environmental sustainability and energy security without requiring homeowners to make separate investments in renewable systems after purchasing a property. Instead, sustainable infrastructure becomes a built-in benefit of the housing sector rather than an additional expense for families to consider.

Solarworks Solutions was formed as a joint venture between Masswork Co., Ltd and Malaysia-based Renosun Sdn Bhd, with the agreement signed in Phnom Penh on June 26. The venture combines Masswork’s construction experience and Renosun’s solar engineering expertise to deploy turnkey EPC services across residential, commercial, and industrial projects. The company also offers Power Purchase Agreements and tailored financing options to expand access to solar systems.
