Myanmar Investment Review
Myanmarâs telecom sector has a new player. U9 officially launched on September 20, 2025, unveiling a 5G-ready core network, a suite of digital services, and a strong social impact agenda that the company says will shape the countryâs digital future.
The new brand, U9, will gradually take over from its predecessor Ooredoo Myanmar as millions of mobile and business customers transition to the network. The company emphasized its commitment to customer-first innovation, inclusive digital access, and broader community support.

Focus on Digital Innovation and Inclusion
U9 is entering the market with an ecosystem that spans telecommunications, broadband, mobile finance, and entertainment services. Its digital wallet, M-Pitesan, was the first telco-led wallet to integrate with Myanmar Pay-MMQR, the countryâs national QR payment system.
The company has also introduced artificial intelligence tools for fraud detection, automated operations in finance and ICT, and partnerships with developers to grow Myanmarâs fintech and digital content sectors.
Later this year, U9 plans to launch U9Lift, a startup incubation platform that will provide mentorship and seed funding to entrepreneurs in fintech, education technology, agritech, and other growth sectors. The initiative aims to invest in and mentor 100 startups within five years, offering them access to U9âs infrastructure and customer base.

Community Impact Through U9Cares
Through its social arm U9Cares, the company has rolled out programs in education, health, and community support. Since April, it estimates reaching around 2 million people through digital literacy and healthcare projects.
U9Cares was also active in disaster response following the March 2025 earthquake, deploying mobile charging stations, distributing relief kits, and providing medical support in affected areas. Employees took part as volunteers, highlighting the brandâs emphasis on community-led recovery.
Looking ahead, U9Cares will expand its impact with initiatives such as the Better Together Fund, which will back community projects, and the Future Leaders Fellowship, designed to provide scholarships, mentorship, and training for Myanmarâs youth.

Governance and Customer Transition
Chairman U Nyan Win said the name âU9â reflects continuity and progress, while CEO Daw Caroline Yin Yin Htay stressed the companyâs commitment to ethical practices, transparency, and customer care.
âWith our initiatives, U9 is committed to ensuring that people across Myanmar have access not only to reliable internet and mobile connectivity but also to opportunities in education, healthcare, and entrepreneurship,â said Yin Yin Htay.
The transition for customers is expected to be seamless. Mobile numbers, SIM cards, balances, and existing subscriptions will remain unchanged. A new U9 app is now available, and to mark the launch, customers can participate in a promotional campaign offering up to 9GB of free data.
U9 currently employs close to 1,000 staff and is positioning itself as both a telecom provider and a social partner in Myanmarâs digital transformation.
