Cellcard and Nokia Partner to Upgrade Cambodia’s Fiber Network with XGS-PON Technology

Cambodia Investment Review

CAMGSM PLC, known as Cellcard, has announced a strategic collaboration with Nokia to upgrade its fiber broadband network using next-generation XGS-PON technology. The move will enable the telecommunications provider to deliver multi-gigabit internet speeds of up to 10Gbps to homes and businesses across the country.

The upgrade involves migrating from GPON to Nokia’s Lightspan Optical Line Terminals (OLTs) and Altiplano Access Controller, which will enhance network automation and improve service reliability. The deployment will cover key locations, including Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and other major urban centers.

Boosting Speed, Automation, and Future Scalability

Nokia’s cloud-native Altiplano Access Controller will provide advanced network visualization, automation, and optimization, allowing Cellcard to streamline broadband access services. The transition to Lightspan access nodes also positions Cellcard for future network expansions, including a potential shift to 25G PON to meet rising data consumption demands.

Cellcard’s ICT Division CIO, Asitha De Costa, said the company remains focused on delivering a high-quality network experience as digital infrastructure becomes increasingly important. He emphasized that the partnership with Nokia will enhance residential broadband services and improve network efficiency, particularly for applications that require significant bandwidth, such as online gaming.

Ajay Sharma, Head of South-East Asia North Sales, Network Infrastructure at Nokia, noted that the company is committed to helping service providers transition to XGS-PON and automation to support the growing demand for 10Gbps services. He added that the deployment of Nokia’s Lightspan and Altiplano solutions would also reduce power expenditure and lower carbon emissions.

Competitive Edge in Cambodia’s Broadband Market

The network enhancement is part of Cellcard’s broader strategy to remain competitive in Cambodia’s growing fiber broadband sector. By adopting XGS-PON and automation, the company aims to improve network utilization and operational efficiencies while delivering a more reliable and scalable internet service to its expanding customer base.
