Cambodia Investment Review
DKT Mekong is set to host a significant event, “Let’s Talk Sexual and Reproductive Health,” focusing on contraceptives and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in Cambodia. The event, scheduled for October 14 at Oakwood Hotel in Phnom Penh, will bring together key stakeholders from the healthcare and SRHR sectors for panel discussions and audience question-and-answer sessions. It also marks DKT Mekong’s official entry into the Cambodian market, highlighting the NGO’s unique approach to SRHR and its full range of products.
DKT Mekong’s Entry into Cambodia
DKT Mekong has been a leading provider of SRH products in Vietnam for over 30 years and has played a pivotal role in promoting SRHR across Southeast Asia. With partnerships with distributors DKSH and Meet Heng, the organisation will introduce high-quality, affordable reproductive health products to Cambodia. Representatives from these partners will participate in the event, sharing insights on how this collaboration will strengthen SRHR efforts in the Kingdom.
Rodrigo Portugues, DKT Mekong’s Regional Representative, highlighted the importance of the event: “We believe that open, informed conversations about sexual and reproductive health are key to improving access and breaking down stigmas. ‘Let’s Talk Sexual and Reproductive Health’ provides an important platform for healthcare professionals and organisations to come together, share knowledge, and collectively contribute to the reproductive healthcare space in Cambodia.”
Expert Discussions and Cultural Challenges
The event will feature a variety of speakers, including H.E. Professor KORN Aun, President of the Cambodian Association of Gynecologists and Obstetricians (CAGE) and Head of the Gynecological Department at Calmette Hospital. Roundtable discussions will tackle the challenges of promoting contraceptive use and family planning, particularly in the face of cultural norms and stigma surrounding sex and gender equality. According to the latest Demographic and Health Survey report (2021-2022), teenage pregnancy and induced abortion rates remain pressing issues in Cambodia, with rural and urban discrepancies.
One of the event’s key objectives is to highlight the role of civil society organisations in raising awareness and providing reproductive healthcare across Cambodia. With recent UNAIDS data estimating 1,400 new HIV infections in 2022, the importance of accessible sexual health resources cannot be overstated, particularly among vulnerable populations. The event aims to foster an environment where healthcare professionals can openly discuss solutions and strategies for overcoming these barriers to better health outcomes.
The event is poised to play a critical role in addressing reproductive health issues in Cambodia, providing a platform for healthcare professionals to collaborate and discuss the challenges and opportunities in the field.
