Cambodia Investment Review
The American Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia (AmCham), in partnership with CamEd Business School, is hosting a Law Committee Luncheon on Thursday, 22 August 2024, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the Palais de la Poste in Phnom Penh. The luncheon will emphasize member engagement and corporate social responsibility (CSR) within the legal profession.
Focus on Inclusivity and Member Engagement
Ruwan Hulugalle, Senior Consultant at HBS Law and Chair of the AmCham Law Committee, highlighted the importance of making the committee’s activities more inclusive. “We aim to make our law committee as inclusive as possible for our members. Their input on advocacy, events, and initiatives is crucial to raising the standard of the profession and improving the business environment,” Hulugalle stated.
He further emphasized the significant role that CSR plays in American businesses, particularly as a key differentiating factor in American investment. “Americans place a high value on corporate social responsibility, particularly as a differentiating feature of American investment. I have been advocating for something similar within our community regarding pro bono work,” he said.
Promoting Pro Bono Work and CSR
To encourage pro bono initiatives, Hulugalle noted that AmCham has introduced annual pro bono awards as part of the AmCham CSR Awards. “These awards recognize legal professionals and firms that contribute their expertise to the community without charge,” he added.
The event will also feature remarks from Her Highness Princess Ermine Norodom, Founder of the Shanty Town Spirit Association, a charity that supports underprivileged communities in Cambodia. Princess Ermine will speak on the importance of pro bono work from her perspective as a charity founder. “Pro bono work is essential in ensuring that legal support reaches those who need it most, especially in communities that lack access to such services,” she has previously noted.
Dr. Virak Prum, Chairman of CamEd Business School, will attend as a special guest, contributing his experience in education and business to the discussion. His participation underscores AmCham’s commitment to fostering collaboration across different sectors to enhance Cambodia’s professional and business environment.
