Golf For a Cause to Debut in Cambodia

Driving positive change through the game of golf, the organizers of the annual Red Hornet Chairman’s Cup (RHCC) golf tournament are proud to present a “Golf for a Cause” edition this year.

To be held on Friday, 29 November 2024 at the Garden City Golf Club, the “5th Red Hornet Chairman’s Cup – Golf for a Cause,” marks a continuation of the organizers’ commitment to support social causes.

Following last year’s success, where they raised funds for the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) to support national demining efforts, the organizers have sought for, and received the approval of the Chairman of the Board of Trustee of the Cambodia Kantha Bopha Foundation, His Excellency Dr. Aun Pornmoniroth, who is also a Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economy and Finance, for proceeds from the RHCC event to the Cambodia Kantha Bopha Foundation to provide vital support to patients and their families who seek free treatment at the Kantha Bohpha Hospitals both in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

His Excellency Dr. Chan Narith, Executive Director of the Cambodia Kantha Bopha Foundation, said, “The Cambodia Kantha Bopha Foundation was established to ensure that Kantha Bopha hospitals will continue to provide free and quality healthcare services without discrimination to the children in Cambodia. RHCC’s initiative to organize “Golf for a Cause” showcases a remarkable generosity for the children in Cambodia. It is inspiring to see the business community rally to give back to society which children in need will forever appreciate and cherish your utmost kindness”.

His Excellency Say Samal, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction, has also kindly agreed to be the Guest of Honor at the Prize Presentation Dinner following the golf tournament.

Conceived five years ago by a group of avid social golfers to foster relationships and expand business networking, the tournament quickly became a cherished annual event, drawing together friends, business contacts, partners, and clients of various nationalities, backgrounds and of course, golfing competencies.

The origin of the name “Red Hornet” is somewhat of a charming, if not whimsical encounter. The founder of the group, Mr Dalton Wong, who is also the President of the Indonesia Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia (IndoCham), was once stung on his toe by a red hornet while he was removing his socks after a round of golf. The pain etched such an indelible impression that he named the golf tournament the Red Hornet Chairman’s Cup, although ironically, the tournament’s emblem features a blue or white hornet with striking red eyes. Yet, it is a fitting symbolization of the unpredictable and memorable moments that make life, and golf, so special.

“I am thankful for the tremendous support for the previous editions of the Red Hornet Chairman’s Cup, and am honored that we have been given the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the Cambodia Kantha Bopha Foundation through this year’s edition of the tournament”, said Dalton Wong.

“Last year’s event was attended by 68 golfers comprising senior government officials, diplomats, businesspersons and professionals, representing more than 12 nationalities. Non-golfers also joined the prize-giving dinner to network and mingle, bringing the total attendance to nearly 100 pax”.

Dalton is also the Chairman of Masswork Co., Ltd., a turnkey construction company which will bring the first Greg Norman designed golf course to Cambodia, and has also been appointed by the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN), the umbrella organization for Indonesian business chambers and associations, to be the Chairman of the KADIN Bilateral Committee Cambodia, a sub-chapter of KADIN.

Evolving with Purpose: From Social Gathering to Cementing a Tradition of Giving Back

Last year marked a significant milestone in the tournament’s evolution when USD 12,000 was raised from sponsorships and participation fees for the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) to support demining efforts in Cambodia.

Building on the success of the previous year’s efforts, the founder has directed the organizers of the RHCC for this year, EC Golfhouse and Aquarii BD Cambodia, to make supporting worthwhile social causes a regular feature of the tournament.

EC Golfhouse is a supplier of golf equipment, accessories and apparels in Cambodia that cater to local and expatriate golfing needs, with fourteen years of experience in organizing company golf events and tournaments for local and international golfers. It has been the golf convenor for RHCC since its inaugural edition in 2020.

Aquarii BD Cambodia is a business advisory company in Phnom Penh that offers strategic market insights, market entry and business matching for international businesses and investors, among other services. Aquarii was asked to help review and strategize a more sustainable model for the RHCC.

Adding the moniker “Golf for a Cause” to this year’s RHCC reflects their enduring commitment to ensure that every future edition of the golf tournament will continue to make a difference in the host community, and is a reminder to participants that passion for golf can also drive meaningful change.

“Previous editions of RHCC were well received, prompting others to copy the format of the tournament. But with a focus on highlighting and contributing to social causes, as well as the profile of participants it is able to attract, the RHCC has become an enabler platform for meaningful and purposeful interaction between members of the various business communities in Cambodia and host government officials”, said Aquarii CEO Michael Tan.

“It is also a bridge for overseas businesspersons and investors to establish new contacts and better understand Cambodia, through a friendly game of golf for a worthwhile social cause”.

Those who wish to be involved in the event, whether as sponsor, a participating golfer or to join the prize presentation dinner, can contact the organizers at info@ecgolfhouse.com or info@aquariibd.com.
