World Bank Report: Mitigating The Adverse Effects Of COVID-19 And Increasing Spending In Social Sectors
Faya Hayati, a seasoned World Bank economist, has extensive experience in trade and private sector competitiveness in Myanmar and Cambodia. His previous roles include serving as a country economist for Iran and Syria, focusing on macro forecasting, debt dynamics, and public expenditure analysis. Before joining the World Bank, Hayati worked in Australia’s Prime Minister’s Office and the Department of Treasury. He holds a Master’s in Economic Development and Diplomacy, as well as a Bachelor of Economics and Law from the Australian National University. Currently, he is pursuing a PhD in Public Policy Economics at George Washington University.
The backdrop to this event is the World Bank’s recent review, highlighting how Cambodia could enhance its translation of increased public spending into stronger health and education outcomes. This review is part of the World Bank’s Public Financial Review titled “Cambodia: From Spending More to Spending Better.” It notes that Cambodia’s improved revenue collection and prudent public finance management, buoyed by consistent economic growth from 1995 to 2019, allowed the country to mitigate the adverse effects of COVID-19 and increase spending in social sectors.
The IBC’s event serves as a critical platform for discussing these strategic economic trends and the World Bank’s recommendations for Cambodia. It is an invitation to industry leaders, policymakers, and professionals to engage in meaningful dialogue on steering Cambodia towards a more prosperous future.
