Cambodia Investment Review
Smart Axiata, the leading telecommunications company in Cambodia, has announced the deployment of Huawei’s iPowerStar 2.0 as part of its ongoing sustainability efforts and pursuit of becoming a net-zero company by 2050. The innovative iPowerStar 2.0 is an advanced energy-saving technology that will significantly reduce energy consumption at Smart’s base stations.
Smart has been steadfast in its commitment to environmental stewardship, employing various measures to reduce energy consumption and promote green energy usage. In 2022 alone, Smart increased the number of sites utilizing solar panels by 242, bringing the total number of sites equipped with solar panels to an impressive 1,080.
Since 2018, Smart has partnered with Huawei to implement power-saving strategies, starting with iPowerStar 1.0, which allowed for scheduled resource shutdown. Subsequently, Smart further enhanced its energy-saving capabilities with the implementation of an auto-activation, strategy-based operation and a quarterly adjustment at the single-site level. Building on this progress, Smart has now invested in the latest energy-saving solution developed by Huawei – iPowerStar 2.0.
Advanced Technology Adjusts Energy Consumption
The iPowerStar 2.0 solution introduces intelligence-driven, power-saving capabilities, doubling energy-savings. This advanced technology adjusts energy consumption based on network-level coordination on a day-level scale. In practical terms, this means that energy consumption adjusts in response to the number of mobile service users. When the number of users is low, iPowerStar 2.0 automatically reduces energy consumption throughout the day, resulting in significant energy savings.
By implementing iPowerStar 2.0, Smart aims to make substantial progress towards achieving its sustainability goals. The technology not only lowers energy consumption and reduces carbon emissions but also contributes to the company’s mission of providing reliable and efficient telecommunications services.
“As a responsible industry leader, Smart is continuously seeking innovative solutions to mitigate our environmental impact,” said Ziad Shatara, CEO of Smart. “The iPowerStar 2.0 technology from Huawei enables us to further optimize our energy consumption, allowing us to operate in a more sustainable and eco-friendly manner. We are delighted to expand our partnership with Huawei and look forward to the positive impact this deployment will have on reducing our carbon footprint.”
Sustainability As One Of The Top Priorities On The National Agenda
In alignment with the new Pentagonal Strategy, which places sustainability as one of the top priorities on the national agenda, Smart’s deployment of Huawei’s iPowerStar 2.0 furthers its commitment to environmental responsibility and supports the nation’s collective efforts towards a more sustainable future.
“As a pioneer in sustainable technology solutions, Huawei is proud to partner with Smart in their journey towards a net-zero future. The iPowerStar 2.0 technology, our latest energy-saving innovation, exemplifies our commitment to delivering intelligent and efficient solutions that not only drive economic growth but also prioritize environmental sustainability. Together, Huawei and Smart are working hand in hand to create a greener and more sustainable world,” said Yao Yuya (Sovann), CEO of Huawei Technologies Cambodia.
Smart remains committed to its net-zero journey and will continue investing in sustainable technologies and practices to ensure a cleaner future for all.
