Cambodia Investment Review
Cambodia’s consumer landscape is evolving rapidly, driven by the country’s impressive economic growth and the unique characteristics of its youthful, tech-savvy population. The 2024 Consumer Report, published by Confluences in collaboration with Standard Insights, provides a comprehensive analysis of these trends, highlighting both the optimism and challenges faced by Cambodian consumers. The report is released annually by the company.
Economic Growth and Consumer Confidence
The Cambodian economy has seen significant growth, with a 5.8% increase in GDP this year, bolstered by substantial foreign direct investment totaling $4.92 billion in 2023. This economic momentum has created a sense of confidence among consumers, particularly among the younger generation.
Dara N. Van, Business Development Manager at Confluences, noted, “More than 60 percent of respondents expressed confidence in the direction of the economy, with nearly 40 percent ‘very confident’. This optimism is particularly strong in areas that are beginning to benefit from investments outside the traditional hubs”.
However, this confidence is not uniform across all demographics. The report reveals a significant degree of pessimism among respondents, especially those aged 18-34. This age group remains cautious due to lingering economic challenges and geopolitical tensions. Dara N. Van emphasized the need for both public and private institutions to address these concerns to ensure the younger workforce’s role in developing Cambodia’s economic future.
Spending Priorities and Financial Goals
Cambodian consumers are prioritizing financial stability, with a strong focus on paying off debt. Cindy Nguyen, Senior Relationship Manager at BRED Bank Cambodia, highlighted the critical importance of financial literacy in this context. “Debt has become an increasing concern as we deal with the ongoing effects of the pandemic. Financial literacy is crucial for Cambodia’s economic growth, helping people understand finance and budget management better”.
In terms of major purchases, vehicles, electronics, and real estate top the list for 2024. Younger consumers are inclined towards vehicles and electronics, while older demographics are more focused on real estate and other long-term investments.
Environmental Concerns and Sustainable Living
The report indicates widespread concern for environmental issues among Cambodian consumers, particularly among young adults aged 18-24. Sébastien Ung, Director at Asia Data Destruction, remarked on this trend: “It is encouraging to see a widespread awareness of environmental issues across demographic groups. The importance of addressing these concerns cannot be overstated, especially given Cambodia’s vulnerability to the effects of global warming”.
Sustainable living is increasingly important to Cambodian consumers. The majority consider it either “Important” or “Extremely Important,” though this sentiment is less pronounced among older age groups.
Health and Wellness Trends
The emphasis on health and wellness among Cambodians has increased significantly post-pandemic.
Thierry Chantha Bin, a professional football player at Preah Khan Reach Svay FC, highlighted this positive shift: “Most demographics are showing a positive attitude towards health and wellness across age groups and genders. More than three-quarters of respondents see physical activity or sports as important, with nearly a quarter engaging in frequent physical training and sports activities”.
Preferred activities include running, cycling, and hiking, with a notable preference for individual sports over team sports. The survey also shows that relaxing at home remains the most preferred leisure activity across all demographics, followed by engaging in sports and visiting malls.
Future of Work and Job Security
Job security and opportunities for advancement are key priorities for Cambodian workers. Denis Barre, Managing Partner at Convergences Executive Search, emphasized the critical considerations for job seekers: “Job security is one of the most globally critical considerations. Younger age groups seek opportunities for advancement, while older groups value job security more. The balance between financial returns and work-life balance is crucial”.
Work-life balance is highly valued, particularly among those aged 25-44. Most respondents prefer on-site work arrangements, despite global trends towards remote work. This preference is influenced by cultural aspects and the value placed on personal relationships in the workplace. Chila Heang, HR & Admin Officer at Confluences, explained: “More than half of the population strongly prefers to work on-site due to the cultural importance of personal relations and better workplace environments compared to home life”.
Concerns about automation and AI are prevalent, with younger individuals showing interest in efficiency and skills development, while older groups express concerns about job satisfaction and workplace dynamics. Gabriel Tan, Chief Communications Officer at Prince Holding Group, views AI as a gateway to opportunities: “The integration of AI unlocks vast potential for those willing to embrace it. In my communications department, AI tools enhance productivity and innovation”.
