Cambodia’s aviation sector is witnessing a significant expansion as airlines respond to the increasing demand from travelers worldwide. According to a senior official from the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA), both local and foreign airlines have submitted applications to augment their flight schedules, particularly during the high season or summer holidays.
Chea Aun, Spokesman and Secretary of State of SSCA, told local media that the government’s proactive stance in facilitating the expansion of flight services to Cambodia’s business and tourism hubs, notably the Angkor Archaeological Park in Siem Reap. “The government encourages not only existing airlines to increase or resume their flights but also others to launch direct flights to Cambodia from around the world,” stated Aun.
He further highlighted the government’s efforts to attract tourists from neighboring countries and beyond, promoting all channels of transportation including air, water, and land. Aun noted the increasing influx of tourists, including those from Israel, who have chosen to explore Siem Reap following the inauguration of the new airport in the province.
Facilitating The Smooth Flow Of Domestic & International Travel
In a move to streamline operations and enhance passenger experience, all existing airlines operating at the current airport will be transitioned to operate at the Angkor International Airport. This transition underscores the government’s commitment to facilitating the smooth flow of domestic and international travel.
Aun outlined the regulatory framework governing airline operations, stating that airlines are required to submit expansion requests every six months to comply with international standards. He emphasized the importance of adhering to seasonal flight schedules and accommodating larger passenger volumes as needed.
AirAsia Cambodia’s Chief Executive Officer, Nam Vissoth, expressed the airline’s intentions to increase international flights pending government approval. Vissoth highlighted the importance of regulatory support in obtaining flight slots and licenses. The signing of a strategic alliance agreement with Oriental Bank underscores AirAsia Cambodia’s commitment to enhancing its services, including cutting-edge payment gateway solutions.
The expansion of airline operations in Cambodia reflects the country’s growing prominence as a tourist destination and trade hub. With enhanced connectivity and streamlined services, Cambodia is well-positioned to attract more visitors and stimulate economic growth in the region.
Meanwhile, Emirates, the world’s largest international airline, has reinstated its daily scheduled flight to Phnom Penh, marking a significant development in Cambodia’s aviation landscape. The resumption of services not only expands Emirates’ Far East network to 21 points but also strengthens its operations in Singapore, with four daily flights.

The return of Emirates to Phnom Penh was met with enthusiasm from both government officials and aviation industry stakeholders. His Excellency Dr. Mao Havannall, Minister in Charge of the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation, extended a warm welcome to the Emirates delegation upon their arrival. Speaking about the significance of this development, Dr. Havannall emphasized the importance of enhancing connectivity to support Cambodia’s growing economy and tourism sector.

Nabil Sultan, Emirates’ Executive Vice President, Passenger Sales and Country Management, echoed Dr. Havannall’s sentiments, emphasizing the airline’s commitment to providing a world-class travel experience. “Cambodia’s rich cultural heritage and growing economy make it an attractive destination for leisure and business travel,” Sultan remarked. “Through the linked services between Singapore and Phnom Penh, we’re also able to support trade and business movements between the two regional hubs.”
